Classic Simpsons: Hit and Run Ventures to PS Vita and Switch Through Diligent Modder's Port
As we anticipate the release of Simpsons: Hit and Run from its PS2 exclusivity, an enterprising modder has already brought the cherished open-world game to the PS Vita. Despite its absence on contemporary consoles, the classic game's journey to handheld devices has been achieved through diligent effort.

By utilizing the game's source code, modder ZenoArrows has managed an unofficial port of this classic to both the PS Vita and Nintendo Switch. To experience this, one must download the official PC version's source code, avoiding leaked versions which are not from the final iteration, and follow the installation guidelines available on GitHub.

ZenoArrows assures that the complete game, including local multiplayer in the bonus game, should be accessible. Nevertheless, the port remains unfinished, leading to occasional glitches and missing visual effects compared to the original PC version.

However, as demonstrated in a video by Good Vibes Gaming, the PS Vita port operates nearly flawlessly. Homer Simpson continues to wreak havoc in Springfield just like the 2003 original. Interestingly, this unofficial port seems to boast superior asset quality compared to Sony's own PS2 classics ported to their handheld devices, such as the Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter collections.

Those yearning for an official, enhanced version of this open-world adventure might have to be patient. Originally published by Vivendi, the game’s rights have traversed a convoluted path through mergers with Activision, Blizzard, and most recently, a Microsoft acquisition. Furthermore, EA created the last-known tie-in game, The Simpsons: Tapped Out. Currently, Disney oversees the general license following its acquisition of Fox. Determining the current holder of The Simpsons: Hit and Run rights remains unclear, but the demand for a remaster continues to grow. When the responsible party emerges, let’s collectively push for a remastered version.

Reflecting on its 20-year legacy, the designer of The Simpsons Hit and Run acknowledged its lasting impact as the treasured "GTA for kids."
